Why Every Personal Brand Needs Both Horizontal and Vertical Photographs

One of the biggest mistakes I see people make is believing they only need one really good photograph.

In reality, your brand lives in lots of different places.

Your website banner. Instagram. LinkedIn. A newsletter. A press feature. Tomorrow's launch. Next month's social media posts.

Each of those spaces needs something slightly different.

That's why, as a London personal brand photographer, I always photograph with both horizontal and vertical compositions in mind.

Why Horizontal Images Matter

Horizontal photographs give your story room to breathe.

They show more of your surroundings, your workspace and the environment you've created around your business. They're perfect for website banners, About pages and anywhere you want to give people a sense of who you are and how you work.

Sometimes the space around a person tells just as much of the story as the person themselves.

Why Vertical Images Matter

Most people will discover your business on their phone.

Instagram, LinkedIn and other social platforms are designed to favour vertical content because it fills the screen naturally and catches the eye as people scroll.

A portrait that looks beautiful on a website banner may not work as an Instagram post, and vice versa.

By photographing both intentionally, you don't have to compromise later.

Why I Never Rely on Cropping

It's tempting to think one photograph can do everything.

Unfortunately, it rarely works.

Cropping a horizontal image into a vertical one often cuts away the details that made the composition interesting in the first place. Likewise, stretching a portrait across a website banner usually leaves awkward empty space.

Rather than forcing one image to fit every platform, I create each composition with its final destination in mind.

A Library, Not Just a Gallery

My goal isn't simply to give you beautiful photographs.

It's to create a varied library of images that grows with your business.

Wide environmental portraits for your website.

Vertical images for social media.

Close-up details of your hands at work.

Relaxed portraits that feel approachable.

The moments in between.

When you have that variety, creating content becomes much easier. You stop repeating the same headshot everywhere and start telling a richer story about your business.

Looking Ahead

A personal branding session isn't just about today.

It's about giving your future self the freedom to launch something new, update your website, write a newsletter or post consistently without wondering whether you have the right photograph.

That's why I always photograph both horizontal and vertical images.

Not because it's expected.

Because your brand deserves photographs that work wherever your story is told.

If you're looking for a London personal brand photographer who creates thoughtful, natural image libraries for websites, social media and marketing, I'd love to help.
